you sit at the station, waiting for 11.25.
the sun is shining down, and you secretly wished you had not worn jeans today.
you glance to your left. a figure is making its way down the platform.
you first notice her hair. wow.
you think to yourself, why would you get it cut like that?
you then notice her outfit. her knee length floral skirt,
does not match the black and white stripe stop she is wearing.
as if you would mix patterns. she looks like she got dressed in the dark.
you notice that numerous others also have moved their gaze to her walking past.
she does not think twice about not making eye contact with anyone.
lost in her own little world.

in-no-va-tion
noun
the action or process of innovating.
• a new method, idea, product, etc.

the only reason we notice the girl, is because she has taken a different approach.
what confidence she has. she clearly feels she does not need to conform
with the ‘fashion rules’ that fashion magazines depict seasonally. she is an innovator.

we as a human race, are a completely lazy bunch.
i’m not talking about sitting on the couch, watching television all day long.
no, not that kind of lazy. the kind that you see everyday.
people wearing the same outfits, because sportsgirl says it is in fashion.
most individuals feel that they must wear what everyone else is wearing
to be able to be accepted within their social groups.
i guess it is easier said than done.

the truth is, trends come and go, causing you to fall out of fitting in until
your purchase the next must have item.
someone, somewhere, is thinking up these trends, predicting what is going to be big.
getting all the chain stores to jump on board, in order to sell their products.
someone needs to tell these female consumers that there is nothing wrong with
starting your own trends or breaking out and not following them at all.

what i do not understand is why everyone is scared.
why people fall into such cliches.
i will tell you why. it is because we do not like change.
we do not like being pushed out of our comfort zone.
we need to take more risks.
you never know how it will go, until you try it out.

innovation is everywhere.
fashion is the most evident, however it is also a necessity in design.

yesterday in a studio class, the new melbourne logo was put up on the screen
for us to discuss. you can view this here.
a lot of the comments that came from around the class were
‘it is too colourful, it looks too different.’
bingo. this is what they designer was trying to achieve.
who says you can’t have a bright colourful logotype
that can be used in hundreds of colours and designs?
at least people will be drawn towards it because of it being so out there,
and breaking all the rules that accompany designing a logo.

i see this as the next step. we need to quit following the conventional design methods,
and make up a new and innovative way to sell or brand an object.

God Kait, these last 2 posts in your blog have been brilliant! I love your thinking, if it's anything like your person then you are colourful, vibrant and very interesting. Glad to see you're not turning to the crowd :)
